Frequently Asked Questions

The Basics

  • What types of garments can you make?

Custom clothing pieces made from stretch fabrics. Past projects include but are not limited to:

  • Leggings

  • Slacks

  • Athletic wear

  • What is “stretch” fabric?

Stretch fabrics are anything that contain spandex and allow for the fabric to stretch. Often, garments made with this fabric will include negative ease to allow the shape of the garment to compliment the body.

  • Will you work with non-stretch fabric?

No; Steed Stitchery specializes in stretch garments, and in order to provide quality, custom pieces to our customers, we do not work with non-stretch (woven) fabrics.

  • Will you alter ready-to-wear or existing clothing pieces?

No; Steed Stitchery creates custom clothing from raw fabric.

  • Can you make socks? (I get this question ALL THE TIME!)

No; Socks are made on a machine that creates a circular knit that has no side seams. This equipment is industrial and completely separate from standard sewing and overlock machines.

  • Where can I see examples of your work?

View the Inspiration Gallery page for past projects.

  • How do you obtain my measurements?

Method 1: You provide your measurements to me. There are plenty of YouTube video tutorials on taking your own measurements, but the important elements are:

    • I will need your below measurements:

      • BUST (widest part of chest)

      • NATURAL WAIST (narrowest part of your torso between waist and hips)

      • HIPS (widest part, including your booty)

(For any additional measurements needed for special garments, I will advise)

    • Use a cloth tape measure

    • Wear either a single layer of form fitting clothing, or only your underwear (this avoids adding bulk to your measurements)

    • Do not hold your breath or “suck it in” while measuring, breathe normally and relax

    • Circle the tape measure gently and hold it so that you can insert a finger beneath the circle of the tape. This provides for Seam Allowance on your garment so that it is not too tight.

Method 2: For a $20 fee, I collect your body measurements in a pre-arranged consultation meeting. Contact me at steedstitchery@outlook.com to schedule.

    • Appointments must be made in advance for this meeting. Options will include Zoom meeting (where I coach you through taking your own measurements) or meeting in a public place in Stark County, Ohio. NOTE: I will be touching your body and taking measurements in very close quarters. If doing this in a public place would be uncomfortable, please consider alternative method 1 or Zoom meeting options.

    • Payment must be made in advance; the cost will be $20 for either an in-person or Zoom meeting measurements, which will be deducted from the final cost of any purchased piece. If you do not purchase a final garment or do not attend the meeting without prior cancelation, this cost will not be refunded.

    • At this time, cash and credit card payments are accepted. Payment must be processed a minimum of 48 hours before scheduled appointment.

  • How do I know what I’m ordering?

After consultation, a full quote will be worked up and provided to you outlining pattern selection, design options, fabric selection, and custom measurements that the piece will be made to. You will be able to make adjustments at this time, and no fabric will be ordered until down payment is made. See Payment Terms below for further details.

  • What is the turnaround time on a custom Steed Stitchery Piece?

Within 3 business days of your consultation, a quote will be provided for the piece you have requested.

After first payment, the average completion time will be 14 business days until delivery. If your piece is more complex, you will be notified of an expected delivery date at the time of quotation.

Final payment will be required at time of delivery.

Payments

  • What is Steed Stitchery’s payment terms?

Upon receipt of your project estimate, 50% of the total cost will be required in order for fabric order to be placed. This is required to cover the costs for fabric as well as shipping to deliver it to Steed Stitchery. Upon completion of the piece, the remaining 50% of the total cost will be due at delivery.

  • How does the quoting and invoicing process work?

After initial consultation, a formal quote will be created listing the pattern selection, design options, fabric selection, and custom measurements that the piece will be made to. You will have the opportunity to modify the project at this time. Once all selections are to your satisfaction, a 50% payment of the total cost will be required for work to begin. After the piece has been completed, you will receive an invoice for the final 50% which will be due at time of delivery.

  • What if I change my mind on a design feature?

Once the final quote has been approved, please notify Steed Stitchery within 5 business days of any design feature adjustments (neckline, sleeve length, etc.). Beyond 5 business days, there is a possibility that the fabric has already been cut.

If the initial payment has been made, and the fabric has already been cut, it may not be possible to make changes. Steed Stitchery will make every attempt to align the finished product with the customer’s vision, however, there will be limitations as to what can be adjusted after the fabric has been cut (for example: if short sleeves have been cut, they cannot be adjusted to long sleeves).

Satisfaction Policy

  • What if I am not satisfied with my completed garment?

Please be advised Steed Stitchery will be unable to refund costs once a completed piece is delivered. You have paid for physical fabric and the labor involved in creating this piece.

Prior to beginning work on your piece, you will be provided a thorough quote outlining the measurements and design (including fabric selection) of your custom garment. You will have the ability to approve this quote prior to any work or payment. Upon approval of this quote, fabric will be ordered, and work will begin. If upon delivery you are not satisfied with your completed garment, please notify Steed Stitchery within 14 days of delivery. Due to the nature of clothing construction, your custom garment can be altered to reduce size (make it tighter), lower necklines, raise hems, or shorten sleeves. (Your custom garment CANNOT be altered to make it bigger, raise necklines, lengthen hems, or lengthen sleeves as there will not be additional fabric to make these changes.) Every possible alteration effort will be made to adjust your piece within the agreed upon terms as part of the original quote.

**NOTE: As part of the approval of the original quote, you have agreed to a pattern and fabric choice. As such, patterns cannot be reworked beyond the agreed upon terms. For example: A hoodie cannot be turned into a t-shirt.

  • What if I need my garment reduced in size after the 14 day policy?

Included in the purchase of your garment will be 1 complimentary sizing alteration which can be completed within 1 year of purchase. Please contact Steed Stitchery with your original invoice information to submit a piece for this alteration.
